Transitional Care - Staying on the Path to Sobriety
Surfside offers extended care for smoother transition back into society that very few treatment programs can match. This is not merely sober living. Our program allows you to progress from initial sobriety back into the community with the continued supportive environment of Surfside Recovery and the skills of an assigned drug and alcohol counselor.
This is where the game plan we gave you in initial treatment is applied in real life. The first 30 days was practice. At this level, you're actually in the game. You'll put the life skills learned during initial treatment into practical application with professional assistance. You'll continue to live in a safe, structured environment and play a vital role in our recovery community while building a new, functional life in sobriety.
There is more freedom and less supervision during this phase, but with this freedom comes responsibility and the stress that accompanies it. We require you to actively seek employment, continue education or volunteer in the community as well as attend 12-step meetings on a daily basis. We don't require you to do this alone.
Staying sober requires a new way of living. Even making the necessary changes to remain sober and build a better life can be difficult to handle without a crutch. Learning the local transportation schedule, buying a vehicle, beginning a new job, continuing education - all of these situations can create anxiety and stress. We provide you with the support and information you need to make these changes and cope with them in a healthy manner.
Resume-building, credit repair, continuing education, techniques for anger management, and improving personal relationships are just a few examples of educational materials and workshops we offer. You'll meet with process and discussion groups twice a week to discuss current obstacles or frustrations and how to handle them. In addition, you'll meet with an assigned drug & alcohol counselor twice a week for one-on-one counseling and house dinners.
At Surfside Recovery, our transitional living clients are an inherent part of our extended family. It is extremely rewarding to watch the transformation process as you gain employment, repair and restore family relationships, and become a successful member of the community.
We Get to the Heart of the Problem
When a quarterback is tackled so hard he has to be carried off the field, does he cry? Or how about a goalie who takes a puck in the face?
Even today, societal expectations dictate when it's “okay” for a man to express his feelings. Using alcohol or drugs to stuff down emotional pain is very common for men. Media, family members and peers contribute to this type of conditioning that eventually cuts men off from their natural emotions.
The problem is, emotions are energy. Over time, suppressing emotions repeatedly leads to physical ailments, such as high blood pressure, ulcers, anxiety and depression. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a direct by-product of suppressing emotions over time. Handling any type of emotional situation in early sobriety can be extremely uncomfortable. The death of a loved one, handling a relationship break-up or establishing new ones can lead you right back into drinking or drug use to ease the pain.
At Surfside, we offer you the supportive environment you need to process these emotions without judgment. You'll meet with a drug and alcohol counselor on an individual basis, as well as process and discussion groups twice a week to discuss mens' topics, current obstacles or frustrations and how to handle them in a healthy manner. We show you how expressing emotions can be a great strength, not a weakness.
